San Diego’s Old Town is known as the “birthplace” of California.  In 1769, that Father Junipero Serra came established the  first of 21 missions to create the beginning of California’s colonization. Father Junipero Serra’s mission and Presidio were constructed on a hill overlooking the future Old Town San Diego. In the 1820’s, a small Mexican village of adobe structures was developed and by 1835 was named El Pueblo de San Diego. In 1846, a Navy & Marine Lieutenant, raised the US flag in the Old Town San Diego Plaza.
